The Silent Battle Behind the Joy

We follow a couple grappling with the unexpected realities of postpartum depression, a condition far more mentally and physically taxing than they ever anticipated. The narrative delves into the lives of a mother and father who, in the whirlwind of becoming new parents, find their own wants and needs sidelined by the overwhelming demands of caring for their newborn. Amidst this new chapter, they confront a myriad of challenges: the isolation that comes with parenting, the pressure to maintain a facade of joy, and the weight of cultural ignorance that dictate how they think they should feel and behave. These forces test their resilience, pushing them to the brink and compelling them to face the harsh truth about their situation. As the story unfolds, the couple's journey becomes a powerful lesson on the importance of seeking help and the strength in vulnerability. Their initial resistance, fueled by stigma and shame, gradually gives way to the realization that admitting the need for support is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step towards healing. This film aims to shed light on the complexities of postpartum depression, challenging societal norms and encouraging open discussions about mental health. It's a relatable and teachable tale that underscores the message: seeking help is a vital act of self-care and a testament to the love for one's family.

Meet the Director

New York, NY

My name is Jamal Smart, and my journey began with a camera in hand, shooting music videos for my cousin. Back then, I thought platforms like WorldStarHipHop were the pinnacle of what I could achieve as a cinematographer. But as I interned at production studios and worked on sets for BET, JFK, VH1, and various fashion campaigns and musicians, I realized something was missing. Despite the accolades, I never felt fulfilled by what I was creating. There was an emptiness inside me, a longing to make a real impact, to leave a message that mattered. I always told myself that I wanted to create something meaningful—something I could proudly show my daughter, something that, if shared with just one person, could change the way they felt. That’s why I created this story—to shed light on a struggle my community faces every day. I’ve had friends call me, struggling with their feelings about parenthood, and I’ve seen family members express that something just didn’t feel right. It never sat well with me, and I realized that postpartum depression isn’t just a challenge for mothers—it affects everyone around them. This film is a reflection of those experiences. The characters showcase how people show up for one another in different ways and how often we neglect mental health when someone is clearly in need. Raising a child shouldn’t be a burden carried by one person alone; it’s a community effort. We should never disregard someone’s feelings. I hope this film resonates with you and makes you feel the same heartbreak I felt when hearing those stories.

“Wow-just wow!”

"Behind The Joy is an incredible film that deeply moved me. The actors delivered powerful performances, and the script was spot on. His mother’s speech brought me to tears—such a raw and emotional moment. I absolutely loved it and am so happy for you and the incredible work you’re doing."

An Emotional Masterpiece!

"Behind The Joy is an emotional masterpiece that I felt from beginning to end. The birth scene was intense, and watching the mother withdraw immediately after was heartbreaking. She experienced deep trauma with no time to process or recover. The film powerfully highlights how cultural perceptions of motherhood contribute to the struggle, especially when fathers dismiss the warning signs. It’s a web of emotions—guilt, anger, regret—and a message that will resonate for generations. Bravo, and thank you for creating this!"
